DESCRIPTION:The conference “Spanish in Africa past, present and future” wil
 l take place from June 28 to 29, 2024 at the Seminar for Ibero-Romance Stud
 ies at the University of Basel.\n\nMost Spanish speakers live in the Americ
 as and Europe. However, the Spanish language also plays a role on the Afric
 an continent that should not be underestimated, especially in the two Spani
 sh exclaves Ceuta and Melilla, Western Sahara, Morocco and Equatorial Guine
 a.\n\nThe aim of this conference is to examine the challenges and opportuni
 ties of the Spanish language in Africa in the past, present and future. Ind
 ividual contributions will examine these various regions of Africa with a c
 lear connection to the Spanish language from a current perspective. The foc
 us will be on sociolinguistic and language policy aspects, but dialectologi
 cal and linguistic contact phenomena will also be addressed.\n\nThe confere
 nce will be held as part of the research project “Improving the visibility 
 of Equatorial Guinea as a Spanish-speaking country”, funded by the Swiss Na
 tional Science Foundation (SNSF), and is co-organized by Sandra Schlumpf-Th
